Bookkeeping Service HoustonThe books, closed by the tenth
We close last month by the tenth. The bank is matched, payroll is set up beside that close, and Steven Palmieri, as the Tax CFO, prepares the return from months that already agree.
A month is done here when the cash matches and no deposit is still waiting on a week.
Open a note. Each one says what that part of the month is, and what we do with it.
1The bank file
The bank file
The month starts when that month's bank activity is in our hands.
Send the file and name the month. We match it before we call anything closed.
2Payday setup
Payday setup
You still run each payday. Payday keeps running on the company you already chose, and we only connect that company to the books.
You still approve the hours. We read the journal after the run.
3Tax set aside
Tax set aside
Money you collected for the state is not profit. Collected tax stays out of profit until the payment actually leaves the account.
We pull that amount out before the statements go to you.
4The statements
The statements
After the bank matches, you get a report you can read without a translation.
If a line does not make sense, that is the question we ask before the tenth.
5The return
The return
The year is prepared only after each month already agrees with the bank.
We finish the open month in front of us. The return uses that finished set, and it does not start from a guess.
6A signed report
A signed report
If a contract wants an opinion on the statements, that opinion is outside this practice.
A signature on a report sits outside this monthly close, and only the disclosures page states that boundary. Send a note if you want that page pointed out.
We finish the prior month by the tenth. The bank has to match, the questions have to be answered, and the tax you collected has to sit apart from profit. A month that still has one of those open is not handed over as finished. Payroll is set up in that same window, the statements follow the match, and the return is drafted only after those months already agree with the bank.
Steven Palmieri works with us as a Tax CFO and the Entrepreneur's CFO, closing each month before the return is drafted. The pages stay open if you only wanted to read. A note starts a conversation. Hiring waits for a signature, and that signature comes after the note and after the call.
Older months get finished before the current one is called closed. A stack of unsorted papers is not a closed month. We start at the newest month whose bank lines already tie out, and we work forward. The return waits for those months. It does not get prepared from a guess.
When a contract asks for a signed report, the signature has to come from a firm that can give one. The disclosures page says that once. The rest of the site stays on the work you came for.
Four things we share
Buffalo Bayou Park opened in 2015 as the trail along the bayou near downtown. Texans share that path on a free Saturday. We still want the shop's Friday deposits dated to the month they were earned, before the weekend is treated as a finished set of books.
Shop signs in the Fifth Ward still carry the old nickname, the Nickel, on a stretch of the bayou about two miles northeast of downtown. People across Texas who follow the wards still say that name out loud. The hours on a timecard choose the payday month. The nickname of the ward does not.
The Astros play at Daikin Park, the roofed ballpark that has also been called Minute Maid Park. A night under that roof is a pleasure every Texan can share. We still want the weekday after it to land the weekend deposits in the right month.
Rice Village is the shop and restaurant district just west of the university. Every Texan who has walked those blocks knows the tables. We ask which month those tables were paid in, because a Saturday crowd is not a closed month until the bank agrees.
