The three rows

We add three pieces on a Harris County file and get 8.25. The state piece is 6.25. The city piece is 1. The transit piece is 1. A county next door can carry another local piece. The address is checked, and only then is the rate written down.

The state row is the part everyone in Texas recognizes. The local rows are why two shops in the same metro area can collect different totals. We look up the address. We do not inherit a rate from the city name in the search.

Cross into Fort Bend and a local assistance district can stand in the place where Harris uses the transit piece. If you sell on both sides of that line, both addresses belong in the note. One blended rate would misstate both.

Where the money sits in the books

A deposit that includes tax looks larger than the sale. We pull the tax out before we talk about profit. Leaving it inside income makes a month look stronger than it is and makes the payment, when it goes out, look like a surprise expense.

The payment of the tax is not profit either. It is the liability leaving. The statements should let you see both moments, the collection and the payment, in the months they happened.

A missed filing is named in plain words. It is not smoothed into a quiet statement. The fix is a later conversation, and it starts with the month the sale belonged to. The three pieces go on the month only after the address is looked up.

Every Texan who has driven the south side knows the stadium where the Texans play. Kickoff Sundays pull a crowd the whole state can picture from the highway. The tax on the meals around that stadium still follows the address of the shop, and it still has to leave profit before we call that Sunday's month closed.
